Inner Safety Project
Supporting safety, inside and out.
The Inner Safety Project advances the science and practice of inner safety, transforming care in communities shaped by war and disaster.
Being safe and feeling safe are distinct. We work in that space, treating safety as both a catalytic experience and an objective. Feeling safe underpins stabilization, rebuilding, and wholeness. It shapes health and choices. And importantly, the subjective experience of safety dissolves the boundary between inner and outer worlds, demanding work in both spheres to take root. The work of building inner safety demands an honest look at the outer and inner conditions that prevent its emergence and maintenance.
Through research, we advance the science of safety as a multidimensional construct. Through community programs and practitioner networks, we create pathways for safety in body, mind, community, spirit, and lived environment. Grounded in community realities and evidence, we position felt safety as a pillar of care and promote pathways for its restoration and cultivation, especially for communities affected by war and disaster.

Inner Safety is more than a project
This is more than a project. It’s a growing community of people who believe that dealing with the least visible wounds of war and violence is possible, even in the hardest conditions, and that people deserve more than survival. They deserve to be safe, inside and out.
We welcome you to join us: as a partner, as a donor, as a practitioner, or simply as someone who believes that safety—real, felt safety—is the aspiration and the treatment.
Omar, Salama curriculum facilitator
“Participating in the Salama Program was a transformative experience. I gained practical tools to cope with stress and psychological trauma and came to recognize the vital role of safety resources in my life. I am grateful for this program, which empowered me to grow and release long-held emotional burdens. I hope others can benefit from this experience and find in the Salama Program a source of peace, healing, and growth. May it continue to support individuals on their path to mental wellness and personal flourishing.”
Yvonne, ISP partner
“Partnering with ISP has been one of the most affirming and growth-oriented experiences in my work. What sets you apart most are the reflective monthly meetings: These are not your typical check-ins, they are genuine spaces for introspection, learning, and shared growth. You encourage us to think deeply about our implementation journey, celebrate wins, name challenges, and explore adaptive strategies together. There is mutual respect and a real sense of partnership.”
Noura, researcher
“I stumbled upon a podcast with some of the ISP team speaking about trauma, justice, healing, and the very complicated intersection of them all. When I joined the team as a collaborator, I really did not know what I was signing up for. The work that they have done was eye opening for me, and the work that we do right now, and dream of doing transcends the typical work that I was familiar with. With ISP, I quickly learnt that numbers don't matter - people actually matter - now sometimes I sit and daydream and get lost in the aspirations of this kind of work. It doesn't feel limiting. It feels liberating.” - , psychologist, Lebanon
